Online Course (Live via Zoom, Small Groups)
Basic Robotics and Programming with LEGO® SPIKE™ Essential
For children 6-10 years old
ONLINE COURSE
7-week course | Basic Level | Sundays March 23 - May 4
Language: English & Dutch
At this level, children develop a curiosity for the world around them, build their own robot models, are introduced to the basics of mechanics and learn to program with the LEGO SPIKE Essential set through a visual programming language.
What are the children learning?
-
The children will learn how robots work, what components and sensors are available, and how to build and program their own robot models.
-
They are introduced to the basic principles of mechanics such as forces, motion, transmission and force transmission through mechanisms such as worm gears, gears and belt drives. They apply this knowledge to design efficient and functional robots.
-
The children learn the basics of programming with a block-based programming language (based on Scratch). They work with commands such as motion, speed, repetitions and the use of different sensors (motion sensor, tilt sensor, etc.). They also learn logical commands (such as conditional instructions and parallel/sequential instructions) to control the movement and interaction of their robots and to solve problems.

PROGRAMMING
ROBOTICS
This course is ideal for beginners in robotics! With LEGO SPIKE Essential, children learn to build and program robots step by step. Each lesson introduces a new challenge, from simple constructions to more advanced designs.
They discover key components such as the hub, motors and sensors and use a visual programming language similar to Scratch - educational, fun and accessible!
Materials Required
To participate in this course, you will need the LEGO® SPIKE™ Essential set. You need to purchase this yourself through the official LEGO website or authorized resellers in your country. The set costs about €350, but don't worry! With the right learning approach, your child can enjoy it for a year and build more than 50 different robots based on instructions - and many more by using their own creativity.
Each lesson lasts about 60-90 minutes, during which children build and program a new robot each time using a child-friendly programming language similar to Scratch. With a weekly lesson format, this set remains relevant for at least a year.
In addition, you need:
A tablet or computer (MacOS or Windows) with the free LEGO SPIKE App and Zoom app (downloadable from App Store or Google Play).

Our course was developed by a real robot school in the Netherlands with extensive experience teaching children. We have extensively tested our curriculum with children, both offline and online, to ensure that it is engaging and effective. Our teachers are experienced and specialized in working with children. Unlike many other online programs, we offer a structured and detailed lesson plan to keep children engaged and truly learning, rather than just playing with the LEGO sets. Our approach combines fun and education with real-world challenges.
-
After completing the basic course, your child can enroll in the advanced course without having to buy a new set-they can just continue with the same LEGO SPIKE Essential set. We offer advanced courses at 4 levels (7 lessons/week each), which means your child can learn robotics with us for almost the entire school year!
